E100, E110, E120, E140, E141, E153, E210, E213, E214, E216, E234, E252, E270, E280, E325, E326, E327, E334, E335, E336, E337, E422, E430, E431, E432, E433, E434, E435, E436, E440, E470, E471, E472, E473, E474, E475, E476, E477, E478, E481, E482, E483, E491, E492, E493, E494, E495, E542, E570, E572, E631, E635, E904.

(Ririn N.F./"PR")***

A variety of oral hygiene measures have been performed since the dawn of time. This has been verified by various excavations done all over the world, in which toothpicks, chewsticks, tree twigs, linen strips, birds' feathers, animal bones and porcupine quills were recovered 1.

Those that originated from plants are tasty twigs and although primitive they represented a transitional step towards the modern toothbrush. It has been stated that about seventeen plants could be enumerated as natural sources for several of these oral hygiene devices 2.

The most widely used tree twigs since early times is the ..Siwak" or ..Miswak" 3 .The stick is obtained from a plant called Salvadore Persica that grows around Mecca and the Middle East area in general. It is widely used among Moslems after Prophet Mohammed ( pbuh ) realised its value as a device which should be used by Moslems to clean their teeth. In this respect our Prophet ( pbuh ) is considered the first dental educator in proper oral hygiene.

Although there is no reference to the use of Siwak in Al-Quran, yet several quotations could be read in the compendium of the sayings of Mohammed ( pbuh ) as to the benefits of Siwak in mouth cleanlinesss. One saying reads as follows:
"IF IT WERE NOT TOO MUCH A BURDEN ON THE BELIEVERS, I WOULD PRESCRIBE THAT THEY USE THE SIWAK BEFORE EACH PRAYER".
Several anecdotes6, incidents, poems 7 and rules of ethics in using Siwak were mentioned in various references talking on the subject of cleanliness of the mouth.

Salvadora Persica is in fact a small tree or shrub with a crooked trunk, seldom more than one foot in diamete, bark scabrous and cracked, whitish with pendulous extrimities. The root bark is light brown and the inner surfaces are white, odour like cress and taste is warm and pungent. Chemically the air dried stem bark os S. Persica is extracted with 80% alcohol and then extracted with ether and run through exhaustive chemical procedures. This showed that it is composed of:
     1 .Trim ethyl amine
     2. An alkaloid which may be salvadorine
     3. Chlorides
     4. High amounts of fluoride and silica
     5. Sulphur
     6. Vitamin C
     7. Small amounts of Tannins, saponins, fiavenoids & sterols

PURPOSE OF THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION:

Because of the great quality of oral cleanliness noticed in individuals who use Siwak as the sole device to brush their teeth and because of the low incidence of dental decay of those individuals this work was undertaken.
It is intended to study the following:
1 .The mechanical ability of Siwak as a cleaning device to the mouth and its ability to rid the mouth of bacterial plaque (aggregates harmful to the gum)
     2. If Siwak is powdered and used with a toothbrush, could it act as an efficient mouth cleaner?
     3. As compared to other strongly abrasive toothpowders, could Siwak rank as highly efficient as to the used material?

DISCUSSION

Oral hygiene and patient motivation towards a clean mouth owe their birth to the teachings of Moh mmed (pbuh). Due to the repeated use of Siwak during the day, the users showed an unusually high level of oral cleanliness. It is a well known fact that plaque formed immediately after meticulous toothbrushing. By the end of 24 hours the plaque is well on its way towards maturation and hence starts its dJliterious effects on the gingiva 8.

Proper oral hygiene should be maintained through intensive instructions by the periodontist as well as by a great expenditure of time and dexterity on part of the patient. This item is self corrected in Moslems because Siwak users take Siwak as a device that should be used as part of their religious ritual regimen.

The results obtained in this investigation have proved that Siwak and other tree twigs 9 could act as an effective tool in removing soft oral deposits. It could be even used as an effective device in preventive dental programmes in mass populations. The indices used in this investigations were simple and adaquate as they discriminated between experimental stages as well as between experimental groups.

Using starch is not quite accurate but it was meant to evaluate the degree by which Siwak and powdered Siwak could rid teeth of deposits as compared to the best abrasive viz. commerical powder.

It is noticed that the difference between first and fifth week of the mean score of plaque percentage for powdered Siwak is the highest (-11.2%) of all readings. This indicates that powdered Siwak is used with t mechanically proper device i.e. tooth brush will give a great deal of oral cleanliness.

It has been reported that Salvadora Persica contains substances that possess antibacterial properties Some other components are astringents, detergents and abrasives 8. Those properties encourage some toothpaste laboratories to incorporate powdered stems and/or root material of Salvadora persica in their roducts (Beckenham U.K. Sarakan Ltd.).

Although the commercial powder gave a high degree of efficiency in plaque removal yet its use over the experimental period gave a high score of gingivitis percentage within the group using the powder. It is time that plaque eradication is essential but this should not be on the expense of deletirious side effect on other tissues.

It could be concluded that Siwak and powdered Siwak are excellent tools for oral cleanliness. Beca se of its availability in this part of the world, being inexpensive and readily adopted by Moslems as part f their religious regimen, it is highly recommended in implementing a preventive dental health program  Islamic countries. Also recommendations should be directed to manufacturers of toothpastes to include the powdered form of Siwak in a highly debriding sophisticated toothpaste.

Islam Online, Cairo

One of the best ways to protect one’s teeth is the siwak, which was mentioned in several sayings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Siwak are the wicks that are used to rub inside the mouth, and they get their name from the Arabic word “yudlik,” which can be roughly translated to mean “massage” (i.e., massage the inside of the mouth). It means more than “tooth brush.”

The best type of siwak is that which comes from the araak tree. The siwak of the Prophet (pbuh) was from that tree. The siwak is a natural twig fortified with natural minerals that help clean the teeth, other inhibitors that prevent gums from bleeding, cleaning agents that kill microbes and germs and a scent that gives breath a naturally fresh smell. The siwak is an ideal, natural brush that has been endowed with more than any artificial toothpaste could ever have.

Like a toothbrush, the wicks on the siwak clean between the teeth and do not break under any amount of pressure; rather, they are flexible and strong. The small wicks bend to the appropriate shape to get plaque and leftover food out from in between teeth while avoiding any damage to the gums.

The Prophet (pbuh) taught us more than 1,400 years ago to use the siwak to clean our teeth and mouth and give it a nice scent. Anas quoted the Prophet (pbuh) as saying: “Whenever the Angel Gabriel would visit me, he would advise me to use the siwak.”

The leftovers of food found between teeth provide an excellent environment for the festering of millions of bacteria, which can lead to painful and bloody gum disease and cysts. In the worst cases, there can be inflammation of the jawbones.

Bacteria also produce damaging enzymes that eat away at the calcium of the teeth, which causes cavities. In severe cases, the bacteria produce gases that emit nasty stenches from the mouth. Recent studies have found that siwak has natural minerals that kill microbes and germs and remove plaque.

The Prophet (pbuh) used to rub the siwak over his tongue, teeth and gums. Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari said, “I visited the Prophet, peace be upon him, and the siwak was at the edge of his tongue.”

Chemical Breakdown Of A Siwak

Siwak has 19 beneficial ingredients in it. Most important among them are:
  • Antibacterial acidic inhibitors that fight decay and diarrhea. They are natural disinfectants and can be used to stop bleeding. They disinfect the gums and teeth and close any microscopic cuts that may have existed in the gums. On first usage, the siwak will taste harsh, and maybe even burn, because of a mustard-like substance found in it, but this is the ingredient that fights decay in the mouth and kills germs.
  • Minerals such as sodium chloride, potassium, sodium bicarbonate and calcium oxides. These clean the teeth. For instance, the American Dental Association considers sodium bicarbonate to be a preferred ingredient in toothpastes.
  • Natural scented oils that taste and smell nice, give the mouth a nice smell. They make up about 1% of the siwak.
  • Enzymes that prevent the buildup of plaque that causes gum disease. Plaque is also the no. 1 cause of premature loss of teeth.
  • Anti-decay and anti-germ ingredients that act as a penicillin of sorts, decreasing the amount of bacteria in the mouth, which means cleaner teeth and cleaner air when breathing through the mouth.

Some researchers have found that tooth decay is rapid when a dry brush is used, and that wetting one’s toothbrush mitigates the damage. So the siwak should be dampened before usage. If there is no alternative, one’s saliva will suffice to dampen the stick. Siwak also has chemicals that cause the mouth to produce extra saliva, which is the mouth’s organic defense and cleaning mechanism

INTRODUCTION

History is a witness to persecutions of scientists by the medieval Church and the consequent branding of all religions to be anti-science. This is however not the case with Islam. For Islam is that religion which emphasises on the need to acquire knowledge form the 'Cradle to the grave'. The Prophet of Islam considered the ink of an scholar more precious than the blood of a martyr. he did not discriminate between men and women in this regard and said, "Acquisition of knowledge if compulsory for every believing man and every believing woman. Although the number of literate people in the whole of Arabia at the dawn of Islam could be counted on the fingers of one's hands, the succeeding decades witnessed an enormous upsurge in sceintific development and learning. so much so that the Muslim intellectuals and scientists surpassed even the ancient Romans and Greeks. Modern science owes everything to the knowledge that they obtained from the Muslims.

Moreover, Jabin bin Hayyan the father of Chemistry as he is known, was from among one of the students of Imam Sadiq(a.s.), the 5th generation of Holy prophet(s.a.w.s.).

But how is it possible for a person brought up in a nomad environment of the 7th century Arabia, to mention things unheard of at that time. Some understood by the world only when science entered its infancy. It was not for nothing that the Prophet (s.a.) said: "I am the city of Knowledge."

His message was supposed to last till the day of the judgement. His teachings had to stand the test of time and hence in addition to the above words: "I am the city of Knowledge."

He said, "And Ali is its gate."

So, this discussion is followed by an extract from the saying of lmam Ja'far as-Sadiq (a.s.) the great-grandson of Ali ibne Abi Talib (a.s.). The saying is famous as Hadith-e-Mufazzal and the part that we have quoted is regarding the development of the human embryo. When we read the words of Imam, we find them in absolute consonance with the Qur'an. Moreover they are in the language of a common man easily understood by all.

Scientific Accuracy of Qur'an Amazes University of Toronto Professor

Dr. Keith Moore of the University of Toronto was amazed to find that many modern discoveries in the field of embryology must have been known to the author of the Qur'an, for these facts are either hinted at or stated explicitly in the Qur'an. This is particularly significant because the Qur'an claims to be the verbatim word of God. How could these facts have been known to any human being living in the 7th century. The presence of these in the Qur'an is proof enough that the Qur'an did not come from the mind of any human but must have been revealed from God whose knowledge is perfect and who therefore, knew what scientists will discover in the 20th century.

Dr. Moore is not the only scientist to have discussed the Qur'anic verses we will look at in this article. But the fact that he is not a Muslim puts what he has to say in a different light. No one can accuse him of inventing things to defend Islam. His findings will have to be taken seriously by any seeker of truth. In what follows we shall draw from his article entitled "Highlights of Human Embryology in the Koran and the Hadith" which was presented at the Seventh Saudi Medical Meeting at King Faisal University on May 3-6, 1982. At the time, Dr. Moore was Professor of Anatomy and Chairman of the Department, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto.

In tracing the history of ideas in the field of embryology, Dr. Moore observed that the absence of knowledge in this field and the "dominating influence of superstition resulted in a non-scientific approach to human development." He noted, for instance, that while Aristotle made some contributions to the study of embryology, he also promoted "the incorrect idea that the human embryo developed from a formless mass that resulted from the union of semen with menstrual blood."

Knowledge in this field could not progress significantly until the microscope was discovered in the 17th century. "After it was possible to examine cells under the microscope, it was reasoned in the 18th century that development resulted from growth and differentiation of embryonic cells."

In view of the above, after Dr. Moore had the opportunity to study certain statements in the Qur'an and statements of the Prophet (on whom be peace) in the Hadith literature, he remarked "I was amazed at the scientific accuracy of these statements which were made in the 7th century A.D."

"The staging of human embryos was not proposed until the 1940's, and the stages used nowadays were not adopted worldwide until a few years ago."

It is reasonable to interpret the three veils of darkness mentioned in the Koran as: (a) the mother's abdominal amniochorionic membrane composed of the fused amnion and chorion. These three anatomical layers protect the embryo from external injury."

Referring to (23: 12-16) And certainly We created man of an extract of clay, Then We made him a small seed in a firm resting-place, Then We made the seed a clot, then We made the clot a lump of flesh, then We made (in) the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We caused it to grow into another creation, so blessed be Allah, the best of the creators. Then after that you will most surely die. Then surely on the day of resurrection you shall be raised. in the Qur'an, Dr. Keith Moore says:

"This verse from the Koran states that God made you from a drop and then changed the drop into a leech-like structure which soon changed into a chewed like substance that then took the shape of bone and was clothed with flesh."

Embryo at 7-mm development stage
To illustrate his point about the accuracy of the Qur'an, Dr. Moore lined up a picture of a leech and a picture of a human embryo at 24 days old to show the striking similarity between the two. Similarly, he compared the human embryo at 28 days with a plasticine model of the embryo with teeth marks deliberately impressed on it and found the two to be quite Similar.

Dr. Moore then turns his attention to the mention in the Qur'an (75:37) Was he not a small seed in the seminal elements, that humans are created from a nutfa, a tiny drop of fluid, which gushed forth, and that God made the progeny of men from "an extraction of despised fluid Then He made his progeny of an extract, of water held in light estimation.(32:8)." He also refers to a hadith which says: "Not from all secretions is the child made." Then he comments:

"It is well established that only a few hundred of the several million sperms in the semen are able to pass through the uterus and surround the ovum in the uterine tube."

Surah (76:2) Surely We have created man from a small life-germ uniting (itself): We mean to try him, so We have made him hearing, seeing. says that a human being is created from a mixed drop. Dr. Moore comments:

Embryo development at the end of fourth week
"The mixed drop mentioned in the Koran could refer to the mixture of small quantity of sperms with the oocyte and its associated follicular fluid. There are the other references in the Koran to the origin of man from a small quantity of 'mingled fluids', undoubtedly the male and female sexual secretions. As we know a secondary oocyte is expelled from the ovary during a process known as ovulation. The oocyte and the follicular fluid pass into the uterine tube, where, if coitus has occurred, they are mixed with several hundred sperms. The resulting mixture (drop) composed of the ovum and the penetrating sperm, becomes the zygote of primordium of the embryo."

Whereas the Qur'an had already mentioned this truth in the 7th century, Dr. Moore noted that one thousand years later; as late as the 17th century, scientists held on to two misconceptions. Some believed that a tiny human being is contained in the sperm. Other believed that it was contained in the ovum, and in either case the tiny human just simply grew larger. Both of these ideas were proved wrong by the scientist Spallanzani in the 18th century when he "showed experimentally that both male and female sex products were necessary for the initiation of development."

Turning to a new subject, Dr. Moore refers to Surah (80:18-19) Of what thing did He create him? Of a small seed; He created him, then He made him according to a measure, and comments: "This verse from the Koran states that from this drop He(God) created him and soon planned his future characteristics and features."

Then he explained his amazement:

"The idea that development results from a genetic plan contained in the chromosomes of the zygote was not discovered until the end of 19th century. The verse from the Koran clearly implies that the nutfa contains the plan or blueprint for the future characteristics and features of the developing human being."

Then he mentions Surah (53:45-46) And that He created pairs, the male and the female From the small seed when it is adapted and says: "This verse states that either a male or a female will be created from the nutfa and that the sex of the embryo is determined at the beginning." This piece of information in the Qur'an is way ahead of its time. "The realization that sex was determined at fertilization was established about 60 years ago when the sex chromosomes were discovered," he says.

Embryo development at the end of eight week
There is more to marvel at. Dr. Moore explains that the blastocyst (the early embryo) implants in the uterus about 10 days after fertilization. Then he compares this knowledge with what he finds in the Qur'an. "An understanding of the implantation process of the human blastocyst is also implied in the Koran." Here Dr. Moore refers to Surah (2:223) Your wives are a tilth for you, so go into your tilth when you like, and do good beforehand for yourselves, and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that you will meet Him, and give good news to the believers. where the act of sex is compared with cultivation. He says: "A tilth refers to the cultivation of land and the comparison of implantation of the blastocyst to the planting of a seed is a very appropriate one. Just as soil covers the seed, the uterine epithelium covers the implanted blastocyst. The blastocyst soon develops chrionic villi for acquiring nourishment from the maternal blood. Similarly the embryo formed from the seed develops roots for acquiring nourishment from the soil."

Fetal development at the end of tenth week
Looking again at Surah (23: 12-16), And certainly We created man of an extract of clay, Then We made him a small seed in a firm resting-place, Then We made the seed a clot, then We made the clot a lump of flesh, then We made (in) the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We caused it to grow into another creation, so blessed be Allah, the best of the creators. Then after that you will most surely die. Then surely on the day of resurrection you shall be raised. Dr. Moore points out that the article thumma (meaning furthermore) "indicates that there is a lag or gap between the nutfa with modern scientific knowledge? Remarkably! Says Dr. Moore: "It is well established that there is a lag or delay in the development of the embryo during the implantation...The agreement between the lag or gap in the development mentioned in the Koran and the slow rate of change occurring during the second and third weeks is amazing. These details of human development were not described until about 40 years ago."

Fetal development at the beginning of four months
Moving to Surah (22:5) O people! if you are in doubt about the raising, then surely We created you from dust, then from a small seed, then from a clot, then from a lump of flesh, complete in make and incomplete, that We may make clear to you; and We cause what We please to stay in the wombs till an appointed time, then We bring you forth as babies, then that you may attain your maturity; and of you is he who is caused to die, and of you is he who is brought back to the worst part of life, so that after having knowledge he does not know anything; and you see the earth sterile land, but when We send down on it the water, it stirs and swells and brings forth of every kind a beautiful herbage. Dr. Moore says: "this verse states that you are created from a chewed lump which is differentiated and undifferentiated." Then he says: "It is well established that the brain and the heart are only partially differentiated at the end of the fourth week when the embryo resembles a chewed substance."

The sequence of stages mentioned in Surah (23:14) Then We made the seed a clot, then We made the clot a lump of flesh, then We made (in) the lump of flesh bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, then We caused it to grow into another creation, so blessed be Allah, the best of the creators. is strikingly accurate. "This verse states that out of the chewed lump, bones are made which are clothed with muscles." Dr. Moore relates the conclusion of modern science: "After the chewed-like appearance, bones develop which are soon clothed with muscles."

Diagram of a developing embryo and supporting structures
A hadith too is found to be remarkably accurate. The hadith states that God sends an angel to the developing child "to create its hearing, vision, skin, flesh and bones." "The ears and the eyes begin to form in the fourth week", says Dr. Moore, "and are clearly visible at six weeks, 42 days after the zygote or nutfa forms. Noting that in the hadith the angel asks God whether the child is male or female, Dr. Moore points out that the sex of the child is not distinguishable at this stage. Males and fema1es look alike at this stage and become clearly distinguishable only in the 12th week. This he has clearly documented with the help of a diagram culled from his book the Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology, 3rd edn., 1982.

Fetal development at six months
Finally, Dr. Moore concludes: "The agreement I have found between statements in the Koran and sayings in the Hadith may help to close the gap between science and religion which has existed for so many years."

All of this go to show that the Qur'an could not have been the product of the mind of Muhammad (on whom be peace) or any other human being living in the 7th century. How could he access information that will not be discovered until the 18th-2Oth century? How could he or anyone else study the human embryo in its very early stages without using a microscope? Impossible. But then the Qur'an must be from God as it claims. The Qur'an says that you and every human being should consider this book with care. Had it been from anyone other than God, you would have found much discrepancy in it. (Surah 4:82) Do they not then meditate on the Quran? And if it were from any other than Allah, they would have found in it many a discrepancy.

CONCLUSION

Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq (a.s.) on the development of a Human being

"The embryo in the world is adjusted, though it is confined within three distinct kinds of coverings- the outer wall, the womb and the placenta. This is a time when the embryo can neither manage its nutrition nor ward off any harm from itself. The menstrual flow is diverted to serve him as a nutriment, just as water carries nutriments to the plants, so this process goes on till such time as its constitution is perfected, its skin over its body gets tough enough to stand the atmosphere and its eyes get the capacity to stand light. When all this gets accomplished, its mother gets labor pangs, which shake her severely, culminating in the birth of the infant. With the birth of the infant, the menstrual flow... is diverted to its mother's breasts. Its taste is altered, so is its color... it becomes a nutriment of the first order...till such time as his body remains delicate, his organs and bowels soft and weak. As he begins to move about and requires tougher nutriment to build up a stronger constitution, his molars appear to masticate food to facilitate digestion. He carries on such nutriment till puberty... Who then created man from nothingness and Who becomes the architect of his worth? Who is ever vigilant to supply his needs from time to time..."

Finally, we may note that the Qur'an is not a Science textbook. Its purpose is not to teach us science, but to teach us guidance the guidance that will lead us to everlasting life in Paradise which Allah has prepared for those who believe in Him and do right. You can be one of those. The evidence is before you, and the decision is yours.

Blog EntryThe Quran on Human Embryonic DevelopmentFeb 12, '08 6:13 AM
for everyone
In the Holy Quran, Allah speaks about the stages of man's embryonic
development :
We created man from an extract of clay, then we made him as a drop in a place of settlement, firmly fixed. Then we made the drop into an alaqah (leech, suspended thing and blood clot), then we made the alaqah into a mudgah (chewed-like substance)... (Quran, 23:12-14)

Literally the Arabic word Alaqah has three meanings :
1. Leech, 2. Suspended thing, and 3. Blood clot

In comparing a leech to the embryo at the alaqah stage, we find similarity between the two in figure1. Also the embryo at this stage obtains nourishment from the blood of the mother, similar to the leech which feeds on the blood of others.
The second meaning of the word alaqah is "suspended thing". This is what we can see in figures 2 and 3, the suspension of the embryo, during the alaqah stage, in the womb of the mother

figure 1: Drawing illustrating the similarities in appearance between a leech and a human embryo at at alaqah stage

figure 2: We can see in this diagram the suspension of an embryo during the alaqah stage in the womb (uterus of the mother).

figure 3: We can see in this photomicrograph the suspension of an embryo (marked B) during the alaqah stage (about 15 days old) in the womb of the mother. The actual size of the embryo is about 0.6mm.

The third meaning of the word alaqah is "blood clot". We find that the external appearance of the embryo and its sacs during the alaqah stage is similar to that of blood clot. this is due to the presence of  relatively large amounts of blood present in the embryo during this stage (in figure 4). Also during this stage, the blood in the embryo does not circulate until the end of the third week. Thus the embryo at this stage is like a clot of  blood.

figure 4: Diagram of the primitive cardiovascular system in an embryo during the alaqah stage. The external appearance of the embryo and its sacs is similar to that of a blood clot due to the presence of relatively large amounts of blood present in the embryo.

So the three meanings of the word alaqah correspond accurately to the description of the embryo at the alaqah stage.

The next stage mentioned in the verse is the mudgah stage. The Arabic word mudgah means
"chewed-like-substance". If one were to take a piece of gum and chew it in his mouth, and then compare it to the embryo at the mudgah stage, we would conclude that the embryo at the mudgah stage acquires the appearance of a chewed-like substance because of the somites at the back of the embryo that "somewhat resemble teethmarks in a chewed substance".
See figure 5 and 6

figure 5: Photograph of an embryo at the mudgah stage (28 days old). The embryo at this stage acquires the appearance of a chewed-like substance, because of the somites at the back of the embryo, somewhat resemble teeth marks on a chewed substance. The actual size of the embryo is 4mm. (The developing human, Moore and Persaud)

B) Photograph of a piece of gum that has been chewed.

How could Mohammad (peace be upon him) have possibly known all this 1,400 years ago when scientists have only recently discovered this, using advanced equipment and powerful microscopes which did not exist at that time ?.  Hamm and Leeuwenhoek were the first scientists to observe human sperm cells (spermatozoa) using an improved microscope in 1677 (more than 1000 years after Mohammad). They mistakenly thought that the sperm cell contained a miniature preformed human being that grew when it was deposited in the female genital tract.

Professor Keith Moore is one of the world's prominent  scientists in the fields of anatomy and embryology and is the author of the book entitled "The Developing Human", which has been translated into eight languages. The book is considered a scientific reference work and was chosen by the special committee in the United States as the best book authorised by one person. Dr. Keith Moore is the Professor of Anatomy and cell biology at the university of  Toronto, Toronto, Canada. In 1984, he received the  most distinguished award presented in the field of anatomy in Canada, the J.C.B. Grant Award from the Canadian association of Anatomists. He has directed many international associations such as the Canadian and American Association of Anatomists and the council of the Union of Biological Sciences.

In 1981, during the seventh Medical conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, Professor Moore said,   " It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify statements in the Quran about Human development. It is clear to me that  these statements must have have come to Mohammad from God, or Allah, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later. This proves to me that Mohammad must have been a messenger of God, or Allah."

Consequently, Professor Moore was asked the following  question. " Does this mean that you believe that the Quran is the Word of Allah?" He replied : " I find no difficulty in accepting this."

During one conference, Professor Moore stated, "....Because the stating of human embryos is complex, owing to the continous process of change during development, it is proposed that a new system of classification could be developed using the terms mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah (what Mohammad said, did or approved of). The proposed system is simple, comprehensive, and comforms with embryological knowledge. The intensive studies of the Quran and Hadeeth (reliably transmitted reports by the Prophet Mohammad's companions of what he said, did or approved of) in the last four years have revealed a system of classifying human embryos that is amazing since it was recorded in the seventh century A.D. Although Eric Statle, the founder of the science of embryology, realized that chick embryos developed in stages from his study of hen's eggs in the fourth century B.C., he did not give any details about these stages. As far as it is known from the history of embryology, little was known about the staging and classification of human embryos until twentieth century. For this reason the, the descriptions of the human embryo in the Quran cannot be based on scientific knowledge in the seventh century. The only reasonable conclusion is that these descriptions were revealed to Mohammad from God. He could not have known such details because he wan an illiterate man with absolutely no scientific training."
